What is an Energy Recovery Ventilator?
An energy recovery ventilator is a device that allows you to ventilate your home effectively even when you are reliant upon the use of your HVAC system. The way that ERVs work is quite ingenious. The device installs into your HVAC system, and it brings in fresh air from outside as it vents out old, stale air from within your home. The streams pass by each other, but intermingle very little. This allows for not only the transfer of heat from the warmer air to the cooler air, but also of some moisture from the more humid air to the less humid.
As warm air leaves your home during the winter months, and cold air is brought in from outside, the heat in the outgoing air is able to prewarm that coming into your home, taking some of the strain off of your heater. The opposite is true in the summer, when the cool air being vented out chills the warm, fresh air coming in. This allows energy recovery ventilators to keep the air in your home fresh, without sacrificing the energy that you’ve already paid for. Plus, you won’t have to worry about air drying out as much, as these systems also allow for moisture transference.
Benefits of Using an ERV System
There are a few different ways in which using an ERV system can benefit you. As mentioned above, this is a great way to heat and cool your home more efficiently without putting your indoor air quality in jeopardy. It can also, though, help to protect the condition of your heating and cooling system itself. You see, when you waste the energy that you’ve used in order to heat and cool air, your heater or air conditioner is going to have to work overtime in order to keep your home comfortable. This can put a lot of wear and tear on your system over time, and that can eventually lead to operational problems and even damages to your system. By taking some of the strain off of your system, an energy recovery ventilator is a great way to supplement your HVAC system. Call Atlantic Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Inc. to learn more.
